On the occasion of the 161st birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, The Tagoreans UK present to you ‘Nohi Shamanya Naari – Not Just an Ordinary Woman’ - a unique presentation of songs, dances, readings and recitations adapted from Tagore’s English play “Chitra” and his Bengali dance drama “Chitrangada”.
Tagore adapts one of the sub-plots from the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata, focusing on the character of Chitrangada – the warrior princess of Manipur – on her journey of discovering and establishing her feminine identity. Tagore portrays her as the exemplary woman – equipped with remarkable strength of character and resolute determination, to achieve her dreams and become the mistress of her own destiny. Through the narrative Tagore also showcases his firm belief in gender equality, which is at the very core of progressive feminist thinking.
Nohi Shamanya Naari is narrated entirely in English, supplemented by a selection of beautiful and evocative Bengali Tagore songs and poems accompanied by dance, culminating in a rich and innovative production – one that you would not have seen before.
