Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta

Episode 5: Swagatalakshmi DasguptaSwagatalakshmi Dasgupta is a versatile singer with exceptional tonal quality that has won her a huge fan following across India and abroad. She has sung and recoded in nine languages. She is a noteworthy composer and poet. She excels as a painter, writer, actress, tabletennis player and photographer. She takes interest in choreography and in directing short films, and has a number of projects to her credit. To put it simply, Swagatalakshmi is a complete artist!

Swagatalakshmi trained in Hindustani classical music under her father, Pabitra Dasgupta and further trained in Rabindrasangeet under Maya Sen. She completed MA Music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, and served as a lecturer there for some years. 

She has recorded 6000+ songs, in different genres of music: Hindustani classical, Rabindrasangeet, Western, Carnatic, Scottish, Irish and Indian folk, Bhajans, Ghazals, Nazrulgeeti, Modern Bengali and Sanskrit stotras. Her recordings of Hindu sacred scriptures and devotional music are much liked by listeners. She has recorded 300 compositions of her own and has 300+ music albums to her credit. In 2006, she recorded the entire Geetobitan (2023 Rabindranath’s songs) over 80 days and made a world record. The album is called Ekla Geetobitan.

She has set to tune 150 of Rabindranath’s poems from Geetobitan that had previously not been put to music by the poet. These were released as a collection of two albums titled Geetobitan EBang Vol 1 and 2. She has recorded Rabindranath’s complete Geetanjali in both Bengali and English.

She is a keen researcher and has a number of notable projects to her credit: an amalgamation of Rabindranath’s songs with the verses of Bhagvad Gita; Hridaye Rabindranath Chetonay Nazrul, where she correlated Rabindrasangeet and Nazrulgeeti very effectively, to name just two.

Swagatalakshmi’s versatility and fluency in multiiple spheres of art have endowed her with international fame, awards, and accolades from across the globe.
